Hog Heaven: Canton, OH – A local hangout with good food and great service
So this review is a little bit of a loaded one. This is not the first time I’ve been to Hog Heaven…actually it’s not the 10th time I’ve been. In the short time I’ve lived in the area I’m pretty sure I’ve been there a few dozen times. The guys and I are on a first name basis with Alicia our server if that doesn’t tell you something. That doesn’t take away from the fact that they needed a review. When we sat down, Dan (my partner in wings) said, “well, what are you going to say about the wings”.
My reply was, “That really depends on how they are.” Even though I’ve eaten these wings many times I will be reviewing this visit as impartially as possible.
Anyway, Hog Heaven is a local joint but there are 3 of them in existence. The one we frequent is in Canton proper. They are actually a biker themed BBQ joint. They don’t do the traditional smoked BBQ. They do what they call “Open Flame” BBQ. As far as I can tell they do some form of pre-cooking of their ribs such as boiling or steaming and then grill them off. It makes for a very tender product but it isn’t my preference although it will do in a pinch. They have great finger foods like Hog Balls and Prehistoric Hog Eggs not to mention the infamous Hog Log (two pieces of cheese cake wrapped in a flour tortilla and deep fried…then covered with toppings).
Ok, enough mucking about…let’s talk wings. They run specials a few nights a week that include regular wings, boneless wings and shrimp (they grill the shrimp on a skewer and cover in your choice of wing sauce). I usually go for the regular wings. I’m a traditionalist from that standpoint. They offer something like a dozen different flavors. On this occasion, in keeping with my WingZombie review rules, I went for the traditional hot wings and then tried the “Cajun spice”.
I first took a shot at the Cajun spice. They were OK. The presentation was average. My feeling is that they were perfectly cooked from the sake doneness. They were crispy without being dry and still they were tender. Where they lost me some what was the sauce. I like the overall flavor and spice but they had an excessive amount of butter on them which made them a bit greasy and heavy for my pallet. The flavor was almost a Caribbean hit with a slight taste of either nutmeg or allspice…I couldn’t tell which. They were quite meaty and fair in size. I would rate these as average.
I then moved on to the hot. These were quite good. Obviously the main difference between these two was the sauce. I would assume that the cook had tossed both my batches of wings into the fryer at the same time and as such, the cooking quality of the wings was the same. The sauce was very good on these. There was plenty of heat and vinegary spice to live up to the hot moniker. They were quite heavily sauced but were not soggy. They also lacked the heavy butter factor I encountered on the other flavor. I would rate them just above average. I guess I need to come up with some sort of rating scale for this thing.
So that’s it. This is a local haunt of mine and you will frequently see me there on Tuesday or Thursday evening which is when they run their specials. While the food may be somewhat average…the service and environment make it a place worth visiting.
